An MBA is by definition a general management degree designed to educate students in areas such as finance, human resources, marketing, strategy and operations management. What distinguishes MBA programs from regular Master's programs is peer-to-peer education, which includes successful entrepreneurs and knowledge sharing between students from diverse backgrounds.

An MBA aims to produce high-level commercial graduates, not just experts on one side. In contrast to master of science or MASTER of Arts programs that are usually consecutive in a bachelor's program, the MBA attracts students from a wide range of academic disciplines.

In addition, an MBA program usually requires several years of work experience, so the student cannot start immediately after graduating from a bachelor's or other master's program.
