Study of civil engineering in Malaysia

Study of civil engineering in Malaysia

Studying civil engineering in Malaysia is a wise choice because Malaysian universities are highly respected abroad. Not to mention the growing popularity of Malaysian education, especially as Malaysia aspires to become the world's sixth largest source of education by 2020.

Civil engineering in Malaysia:

The focus of civil engineers is on the design and development of infrastructure through computer-aided design. Small projects may include the development of roads and buildings for major transportation systems, or water supply systems nationwide.

Students pursuing civil engineering are usually passionate about mechanics, hydraulics, geotechnics, materials science and statistical analysis of simple and complex systems.
Civil engineering universities in Malaysia offer the following disciplines: structural engineering, architecture, transport engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, and hydraulic engineering.

How long does it take to study civil engineering in Malaysia?

This depends on the level of the course you have enrolled in, as well as the university's criteria. Some institutions allow longer periods of study. The minimum duration of the course between universities may also vary, usually the duration of all engineering studies as follows:
Bachelor's degree: 4 years.
Master's degree: 1 to 2 years.
PH.D.: 2 years.

What are the conditions of admission?

Depending on the duration of your study, your eligibility will vary depending on your course and educational institution. In general, the admission requirements for each level of study are:

Bachelor's degree requirements:

  • 5 units supported in SPM or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 Cs for math, physics, and chemistry at A-levels or equivalent levels.
  • Diploma in related field.

Master's degree requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field.
  • The work experience is also taken into account.

Doctoral requirements:

Master's degree or equivalent in a related field.
A bachelor's degree with an excellent CGPA is at least 3.70 (for doctoral students immediately after bachelor's degree).
Here are some bachelor's programs in civil engineering, offered by some universities in Malaysia:

Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons.) Mani pal International University:

Mani pal International University offers a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons.) that includes an intensive study of various engineering courses related to this field, with a focus on professional and personal development.

Terms of admission:
  • Pass STPM with two basic permits including mathematics and physical sciences, or
  • Pass A-Levels with a minimum pass limit of two tests in subjects including mathematics and physical sciences, or
  • Pass the basic test in science/foundation in engineering in a relevant field recognized by the Malaysian government, or
  • Get a diploma in a related field from the Institute of Higher Education as recognized by the Malaysian government, or
  • Meet other eligibility requirements recognized by the Malaysian government, as well as English proficiency.

Bachelor of Civil Engineering (H.E.), National Energy University (UNITEN):

The Department of Civil Engineering offers a full-time university program that will result in a bachelor's degree in civil engineering (with honors), which is designed to prepare students to become civil engineers capable of planning, designing, building and maintaining civil engineering facilities such as buildings, bridges, Foundations, highways, water supply systems, sanitation schemes and other forms of infrastructure.

This program is also designed to provide students with an educational base to rise to the rank of "professional engineer", as well as to conduct a Master's degree in civil engineering and a PH.D. in philosophy from UNITEN and other reputable higher education institutions.
