International scholarships for young surgical students from countries other than the United States or Canada

The American College of Surgeons offers international scholarships to young surgical students from countries other than the United States or Canada who have a significant interest in teaching and scientific research. These scholarships will provide an opportunity for researchers to visit clinical, teaching and research medical activities in the United States and Canada.

Details
These scholarships were originally given through the legacy of former college director Paul R. Hawley, who left him for college. More recently, donations from the Abdol Islami family, MD (FACS), the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and other international donations have enabled the number of scholarships to double.

The scholarships offer successful applicants the opportunity and privilege to participate in the college's annual clinical conference to be held in San Francisco, California, in October 2019, with public recognition of their participation. The program is fully involved in educational opportunities and activities of the American College of Surgeons.

  • International guest scholarships must be used in the same year they were accepted and cannot be postponed.
  • Surgeons with work experience are more appropriate than those who work in senior academic appointments.
  • Applicants who have never received surgical training or fellowship will be given preference in the United States or Canada.
